The best 15 free games for Windows 10, in the Microsoft Store

Microsoft is trying to offer a different take on gaming in Windows 10, which is connected to the universal apps and promises to provide a "true" cross-platform play experience. As such, we wanted to see what games can be played in Windows 10 and, of course, which offer excellent quality, free of charge. There are a lot of both free and commercial possibilities for you to try, but we decided to propose fifteen free games that you can play today on any of your Windows 10 powered devices. Still, do keep in mind that most of these games, also offer a series of paid features, that can enhance your gaming experience if you make in-app purchases. We tried to cover a wide range of genres, suited to different types of players and preferences, as it is not easy to include all the top rated free games available in the Microsoft Store:

Before going ahead, read this:

One of the essential features of Microsoft's policy is the potential ability to play games across platforms, with the help of the universal apps. This means that, for example, you can play an online game on your computer, with people who use the Xbox version of it. This strategy makes it possible for Microsoft to bring together its Xbox and Windows platforms. It also means that Microsoft can create a new gaming ecosystem that spans from laptops and desktop PCs to tablets and, of course, game consoles and, the now defunct, Windows Mobile smartphones.

In the center of all of these gaming features, we find the Xbox app, which is built into Windows 10. Those of you who have played on Xbox One will immediately notice that this application resembles that of the Xbox dashboard with all of its exciting features. For example, the Game DVR software is available both on PCs and Xbox One consoles, and it allows you to record, edit and share game footage with your friends.

But enough about all these technical details: let's see what great free games you can play right now, on your Windows 10 powered devices.

1. Asphalt 8: Airborne

Asphalt 8: Airborne is one of the most popular arcade racing games in the Microsoft Store, and it encompasses all the constant developments of the Gameloft franchise. It requires quite a lengthy download and installation time as it involves a 2.6 GB installation file, so relax and calmly wait for it to finish. Once you install it though, you are greeted with a list of over 180 cars and motorcycles, including high-performance dream racers like the Ferrari FXX, Lamborghini Veneno, Apollo IE or the Kawasaki Ninja H2R, which you can use after gradually unlocking them with the money you win while racing.

This addition to the franchise features over 40 different high-speed tracks in various exotic locations, so it is hard to get bored. It also features a large variety of race modes, and a multiplayer mode, which enables you to play either simultaneous online races with other players, or asynchronous races in which you can race your friends even if they are not online. It offers a smooth arcade racing experience with accurate controls, which keep you glued to the screen for quite some time. In-app purchases are, of course, available, but the constant push towards buying them, as well as the ads, can be a little bit annoying.

2. game

Although its name is a bit strange, the game is a classic reborn. If you were a teenager during the 90s, then you undoubtedly played the old Snake game at least once. Well, the game is a reinterpretation of it, which you can play online against other players/worms/snakes. :) The game is simple: you start from being a small worm, you eat things, and you get big. You can cross your tail but if your head touches another worm/snake, you explode, and you have to start over.

The game is a fun game to play for a while, and if you are nostalgic, you will like it a lot. Even if there is no story behind it and nothing complicated about the way it is played, it manages to engage you in short bursts. The only thing annoying about it is the large area of ads that are shown on the right side of the window. Otherwise, it is a pleasant game to play, for at least a few minutes each day.

3. Despicable Me: Minion Rush

This hilarious game is a must-have for all of you minion lovers out there who use Windows 10. Despicable Me: Minion Rush is a typical runner-type game where you play as a cute minion that has to dodge obstacles, collect bananas and battle villains such as Vector, El Macho and the Villaintriloquist, all to impress your boss Gru and gain the title of Minion of the Year. The main in-game currency is bananas which you can use to purchase an upgrade, weapons, and outfits for your little minion.

The game features hundreds of missions which are full of fun surprises and tricky obstacles. You can run through recognizable locations from the movie, such as Gru's lab or El Macho's lair. The gameplay is enjoyable and requires you to spend quite a lot of time to progress through it quickly. Of course, you can use real money to make in-app purchases that help you finish missions at a faster pace and with more significant achievements.

4. Dungeon Hunter 5

Dungeon Hunter 5 is a well built action-RPG game that is both challenging and addictive. It is a new addition to Gameloft's dungeon crawler series, that continues the interestingly crafted hack and slash adventure of the first games, this time with a faster and more fluid combat system. The gameplay is straightforward, as you have to guide your hero, a bounty hunter, in a fantasy world, the Kingdom of Valenthia.

You do not have the option to choose between different character classes, but you can develop the way your character fights with the help of the 46 armor types and 150 weapons. Players can also customize the two spell slots and choose a belt item that could give them additional advantages.

Besides the single-player missions, you can also participate in daily and weekly events, where you can win unique materials that help fuse and evolve your gear. Furthermore, you can use your friends or other players as allies in the cooperative gameplay to assist you throughout the journeys. Finally, we have to say that it is a highly addictive game for those of you who love role-playing games, featuring great graphics, a lot of NPC character interaction and, of course, a substantial amount of hacking and slashing. Do consider that the game also comes with in-app purchases to make your life easier in the game, but that should be treated carefully.

5. Sonic Dash

For all of the Sega nostalgics, we recommend this small but very entertaining game that is going to rekindle your relationship with the iconic Sonic the Hedgehog. Sonic Dash is another fast-paced runner-type game that supplies you with an endless array of straightaways, curves and, of course, jumps. You also get the chance to battle with several of Sonic's well-known enemies, such as Dr. Eggman. The primary purpose of the game, as it has always been, is to collect rings, which also helps you with in-game purchases.

As you move forward through the game, you are offered the opportunity to unlock other classic characters, such as Tails, Shadows or Knuckles. The game features a limited number of locations, the Seaside Hill Zone and The Green Hill Zone, but they offer pleasant scenery for the otherwise extremely tangled and twisted paths. The sound effects, on the other hand, are fantastic and they can take those of you that grew up in the '90s back to your childhood.

6. Modern Combat 5: Blackout

We wanted to include a free first-person shooter on this list, and after searching through the Microsoft Store, we finally settled on Modern Combat 5: Blackout. This is a game that should appeal to all the Call of Duty or Battlefield aficionados, as it closely resembles their gameplay and structure. It contains two different areas: an action-packed single-player campaign that features a fantasy storyline and a multiplayer mode with a fast-paced environment and a well-developed progression system. The multiplayer also features five different soldier classes (assault, heavy, recon, sniper and support) that allow you to unlock a specific set of weapons and to develop by separate ability trees.

However, you should know that Modern Combat 5: Blackout makes it mandatory for you to be connected to the internet, even if you want to play the single-player campaign. The graphics of this game are amazing, and they help provide a pleasant gaming experience.

7. Pinball FX2

Pinball FX2 is a truly addicting game that uses the basic physics of a real-life pinball machine in a virtual environment. The game features only a few different pinball tables when you first start it, but they look good, and they behave quite realistically. The game is a lot of fun if you start competing with your friends and rack up respectable scores on these challenging and, sometimes, frustrating tables.

This is a classic, uncomplicated and somewhat old-school arcade game that can help you relax and unwind. If you like pinball machines, you should give this game a try.

8. Cut The Rope

Cut The Rope is an adorable little action puzzle-physics game. It is highly entertainable as it does not impose complicated rules and it can challenge your neurons a bit. The main idea is to cut ropes at the right moment to feed a little monster called Om Nom with a piece of candy. You can play it in short bursts or marathon gaming sessions.

Each level of the game is designed to make it difficult for you to deliver the candy to the little monster. You must use the ropes, bubbles or whoopee cushions to move the candy in different directions and avoid the pegs, spikes or electricity. The difficulty of the game increases with each level, and it throws you quite a few head-scratchers along the way. Still, do remember that this is a trial version and only the first two levels are free. For the rest of them, you have to make in-app purchases to gain access.
